Absente: Absinthe Refined
110 proof – Absinthe
Approx. $40.00 750ml
If you enjoy the taste of star anise or black liquorice, you’ll like this drink considering that’s exactly what it tastes and smells like. The color’s also attractive. If you’re used to just brown, gold or clear liquor, Absente’s neon green will surprise you. It’s just an overall attractive looking and smelling drink. Not to mention that it makes for a decent shot.
As short as that paragraph is, those are basically the pro’s. As far as the con’s go, the whole “absinthe tradition” just takes too long. I don’t have the patience to sit there and drip ice water on to a sugar cube until that sugar cube dissolves in to a cup of Absente and turns the green in to a milky white. You could have pounded back a few shots and mixed some of your favorite rum and coke by the time that happens. Which brings me to my next point: it tastes better prior to mixing. So if you absolutely must try this, try a shot or two prior to mixing it with sugar and water. Also, don’t think you’re going to get the full absinthe affect. It doesn’t contain nearly enough wormwood regardless of what the lable says. All-in-all, I wouldn’t bother with this again. It’s not worth the cash or time spent trying to mix it.
