3 Howls Banana Vodka
80 Proof – Vodka
Approx. $19.99 750ml
Recently we celebrated Tony’s Birthday, and to prep for the occasion, we packed the big cooler with as much liquid happy as we could. And like most of our birthdays, we drink like fish and play drinking games in-between all the drinking we do. I don’t have a clue how many bottles we went through, or why we thought it was a great idea to just float liquor bottles in the pool while playing the shot game we made up. Which by the way, was played by throwing rolled up socks at each other. What I do know is there wasn’t much left in the cooler upon our return home. This made tonight’s review choice an easy one, 3 howls banana vodka.
I tried it during the party mixed with OJ and it was good, but wasn’t really what I was in the mood for at the time. Later on I went to make another drink, but I couldn’t find anything to mix it with. So the bottle got put back in the cooler for the rest of the weekend.
Tonight I really wanted to jump into this review, but again, I really didn’t know what to mix this with. Everyone online mentions a lot of creamy mixes like Bailey’s, Kahlua, half and half and ice cream. I try not to do dairy with my food or drink, so that’s not an option. Again, I was stumped on how to drink this vodka. I thought about it for a good hour or so and while I was thinking, I tried some straight.
The aroma from my glass was misleading, banana smacks you in the face, but is pretty mellow once sipped. It shows up quickly, but also quickly fades away to a pretty long lasting burn. Just barely before the burn had me looking for a chaser, I could also pick up a little ground cinnamon. I thought this would be too sweet to sip neat but the sweetness wasn’t the issue, the oily burn was. I added ice to see if it would cool it down a little and it did, but it still wouldn’t recommend sipping on it.
So now back to the search for a mixer. The only thing I could think to mix it with was strawberry soda, but of course we didn’t have any. So I got desperate and tried cranberry juice. Not one of my best ideas. It was drinkable, but the tartness overpowered the banana and it tasted like an odd cape cod. I then found some passion fruit juice and gave it a shot. It was better but again the banana was hard to find and just tasted like passion fruit juice with cinnamon.
If your craving more of a bold banana taste, I would recommend picking up something else like Blue Chair Banana Rum or Malibu Banana. I still really feel that this in the right cocktail, would be really good, and I will continue searching for something to mix it with.
